About

Composer and pianist working in the French modern tradition of color, line, and counterpoint.

Joshua Beacom (b. 2001) is a composer, pianist, and conductor from Akron, Ohio. As a film composer, he has worked with many directors and several independent film studios while garnering a reputation as a musical chameleon, able to compose in a wide variety of forms and styles. Films he has composed for have gone on to accumulate several awards and nominations. His concert works encompass many genres and ensembles (chamber, orchestral, and solo works,) but he particularly focuses on choral music as a prime mode for communicating his passion for historically informed counterpoint and spiritual principles. He has also produced several works for vocal jazz ensemble.

His work has also led to conducting opportunities, mostly in directing performances of his own pieces. Committed to the performance of new music, he is active as an accompanist, performing a diverse catalogue of works with a wide variety of performers, while also garnering praise for his appearances as a soloist. Additionally, he has premiered and performed many contemporary works as a vocalist, appearing with professional ensembles like the Cleveland Chamber Choir, and the Cleveland Vocal Project, in which he is a core member and arranger.

Academically, he is interested in writing and lecturing about the counterpoint of French composers from the 20th century including Maurice Duruflé and Darius Milhaud, as well as the history of concert music in the cultural and ecclesiological Protestant faith traditions. As a speaker, he has presented conference lectures on these topics and others at various academic institutions in Northeast Ohio. His online blog serves to showcase his poems, and his various thoughts on theology. He holds a degree from Kent State University (Bachelor of Music) and is currently earning a degree from Cleveland State University (Master of Music).
