Program note

Originally intended as the prelude to a cantata on the Book of Ruth, Largo was extracted and performed as a standalone movement when the larger project proved too extensive. Romantic harmony and form permeate the score, with intense chromatic episodes conveying longing and despair while a lyrical cello solo anchors the opening.
