Program note

Written for the Cleveland Chamber Symphony in the spring of 2025, Overture embraces the cinematic tradition of opening a film with a collage of themes. Contrasting sections move through surprise, fear, and ecstasy while employing orchestration techniques reminiscent of Shostakovich, Ravel, and Tchaikovsky. A distinctly American voice ultimately emerges through bright brass fanfares.
